Raymond Henry Williams (31 August – 26 January ) was a Welsh Marxist theorist, academic, novelist and was an influential figure within the New Left and in wider culture. His writings on politics, culture, the mass media and literature made a significant contribution to the Marxist critique of culture and the arts.
Somecopies of his books have sold in UK editions Alma mater: Trinity College, Cambridge. Indeed, Williams’ first books were Drama from Ibsen to Eliot (; revised as Drama from Ibsen to Brecht, ); Drama in Performance (); and Preface to Film (with Michael Orrom, ).
In he became Cambridge’s Judith E. Wilson Professor of Drama. This article traces a history of the literary critic and theorist Raymond Williams’s idea of the “structure of feeling”, the formation of which is situated within debates about the place of artistic and moral values in democratic politics during the s and s.
